The Gazette Seeks Two Letters Editors

The Linewaiters’ Gazette has been the Park Slope Food Coop’s official newsletter since its inception in 1973, when the Gazette was mimeographed and distributed to the Coop’s then few-hundred members. Since it went digital in 2021, the Gazette has had over half a million views and more than 130,000 visitors to its WordPress site.

The Gazette currently seeks two Letters Editors to steward one of the publication’s most vital and visible sections: the Letters to the Editor. The Letters Editors will work together, in coordination with the Coordinating Editors, to review all letter submissions for each issue, published every three weeks. The role includes evaluating letters against the Gazette‘s submission guidelines and its Fairness, Anonymity and Respect policies; corresponding with letter-writers about edits; selecting a representative range of letters when multiple submissions address the same topic; lightly copy editing letters to conform to AP style; and exercising careful judgment on sensitive submissions.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in editing, journalism or a related field
  • Excellent judgment, tact and diplomacy
  • Strong communication skills and comfort corresponding directly with members about editorial decisions
  • Close attention to detail and familiarity with AP style
  • Able to work with diverse groups of people and meet deadlines on a three-week production cycle

Prerequisite: one year of Coop membership prior to applying.

If you have the relevant experience and Coop tenure and are interested in serving the Coop in this important capacity, please email your résumé and a cover letter explaining your interest and qualifications to: GazetteSubmissions@psfc.coop. Please put “Letters Editor” in the subject line.

Diversity Statement: We seek an application pool that reflects the diversity of the Coop’s membership.
